Vision and Intent for Art and Design
The art curriculum at Hollybush Primary School has been designed to provide children with a variety of opportunities to develop and nurture their skills using a range of different media and materials. We want our children to develop an array of skills to express their imagination and creativity and be confident in doing so. Throughout their time at our school children will learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D model work. We want our children to be inspired by and respect the range in styles and artwork of different artists and aspire to produce similar work. By giving our children stimulating and motivating first-hand experiences, in our local area and further afield, we hope for them to develop a passion for art and for this to shine through in their projects.
Art lessons teach children the importance of being evaluative and reflective towards their own work and the work of their peers; encouraging thinking and talking about how things can be changed and improved. We want our children to be independent, and confident to take risks in their work and be able to reflect on why some ideas work better than others. Children will be taught to use and remember key subject specific vocabulary and to make cross-curricular links between art and other school subjects. We want the art curriculum to nurture a ‘can do’ attitude towards art, and to build children’s resilience in engaging in art processes through trial, error and deliberate practice when designing, planning and sketching their artwork, and creating their final pieces.
